SUBJECT LINE: Please support the Noise Ordinance as Proposed!

SAMPLE LETTER TEXT:

Dear Mayor, Councilmembers, and City Manager Campbell,

My name is ____________________  and I live in the _____________ neighborhood here in Asheville.

<<Insert your personal connection to the music business and/or to attending and valuing live music in Asheville here>>

First and foremost, thank you for moving up the vote on the noise ordinance to the July 27th meeting agenda.  It is critical to our local music businesses and musicians that they understand their legal footing now vs. in the fall.  I am writing today as an Asheville resident and neighbor, a (insert your music profession here if applicable!) and a fan of live music.  This issue is very important to our community and to our music scene that is just beginning its long road to recovery from the pandemic, which left it devastated.

I ask for you to support the noise ordinance as it is currently proposed, and to vote yes on the current draft.  By passing this reasonable and enforceable ordinance now without delay, we will protect our local live music scene and give them the certainty they need about the future so they can survive and make a plan to return to health and sustainability. After two years of collaboration and cooperation with neighborhoods, City Staff, City Council Public Safety Committee and Asheville residents, we have reached a sensible and reasonable Noise Ordinance draft and we thank you for standing with the work resulting from this process.   I would also like to point out that in the survey the City sent out to residents, amplified music was ninth on the list of concerns for noise, after many other, more pressing concerns. Passing the noise ordinance as it is currently drafted, now, will give relief to those who are experiencing noise issues that are most concerning to public health, will create fair and reasonable parameters for live music operators and their neighbors, and will protect the vitality of our vital and vibrant music scene and the 1000s of people who live here and visit here because of our music industry.

I plan to attend the July 27th City Council meeting to be there in solidarity with the music community.  I know the agenda is full and that we expect a large community turn-out. Because of that, I will plan to hold any comments in support of this ordinance draft unless it’s necessary for me to speak up to protect it.

Thank you for your time and I hope I can count on your support of local live music, musicians, and venues.

Sincerely,
